Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to document a women’s retreat in Costa Rica that did just that—and I’m thrilled to FINALLY share the experience with you!
The Retreat: A Transformative Experience
Stephanie Chinn’s Costa Rica women’s retreat was a trove of self-discovery, adventure, and empowerment. We spent a week not only hiking awesome volcanoes, swimming beneath tranquil waterfalls, relaxing on the beach, and adventuring but also deeply connecting with ourselves and fellow women on a similar path.
The retreat began with our visit to La Fortuna Waterfall’s 530-step decline- the views, wildlife and lush rainforest making the trek totally worth it.
I brought my camera and a Go Pro along to document our adventures and take some group photos. But you know me, I also totally planned on creating some empowering portraits with anyone that was down to trust me.
When we finally made it to the bottom of the waterfall, I began setting up my camera. One of the attendees told me that she had boudoir photos done before her mastectomy and that she would love to have a good photo of herself in Costa Rica so she could see the beauty in her body after her procedure.
I positioned her between my camera and the 200+ foot waterfall.
The resilience, strength, and awe-inspired worthiness the two subjects in my frame shared were not lost on me.
Before long, other attendees gathered around, intrigued by the process. I asked if anyone else would like to be photographed, and slowly, volunteers stepped forward.
Stepping Into the Spotlight
It was moving to witness the transformation. Not everyone was eager to be in front of the camera, and that was perfectly okay. Some chose to stay on the sidelines, offering encouragement and support. The supportive atmosphere allowed everyone to feel comfortable and celebrated, regardless of whether they chose to be photographed.
As we traveled to Jaco Beach in the final days, a notable shift occurred.
The initial hesitance had melted away, replaced by a wave of excitement. When I asked who would like to meet up on the beach for photographs, everyone, including those who had been unsure earlier, was enthusiastic.
Women of all ages, sizes, backgrounds, and journeys embraced the opportunity to see themselves in a new light. It felt a celebration of collective growth and self-acceptance.

This retreat was more than just a vacation; it was a dive into what self-love and empowerment really mean. It gave each participant the chance to step outside her comfort zone and embrace her unique beauty. It was about celebrating ourselves and discovering the magic that lies within each of us. The joy of watching women shed their insecurities and fully engage in the experience was truly inspiring.
