I find growing plants to be something of a self care practice for me. The mindfulness it requires to remember that my plants need water is important. Caring for something outside myself offers me perspective. Growing green things in my space offers me a connection with nature. Watching for signs of disease or issues requires focus.
The skills that tending to plants give me are things I use in my everyday life.

Virgil’s is a longstanding shop here in KC, starting as the first mobile plant shop back in 2019. Since then they’ve expanded to a brick and mortar as well as Virgil’s Palm Springs next door! You’ll find a great selection of beginner and rare plants here.

rOOTs is an amazing, Kansas City-based, woman-owned plant shop that has three locations for you to choose from! I love the fact that they have a northland location (be honest…we’re lacking in local businesses up here!), and that they have a location on the streetcar route. Their selection is wide but not overwhelming and includes fan favorites alongside more rare specimens.

Just north of Kansas City you will find arguably my favorite place to get plants. Larry’s consistently has a great selection of both indoor and outdoor plants at prices that typically can’t be beat. If you’re looking for value, Larry’s is where you should head. No fuss, just beautiful plants at a great price in a greenhouse.

A true garden center, you can also find things like fairy gardens, garden gnomes, and gorgeous planters. Stop into the Shawnee location for a delicious coffee at Cafe Equinox from Thou Mayest while you browse!
Studies have shown benefits of houseplants ranging from decreased anxiety to healing patients faster! The beauty they bring to indoor spaces is just one of many benefits to keeping and caring for a green friend. My recommendation? Give them names! Start small with one or two easy to care for plants and grow your collection from there. Learn how to propagate from cuttings and share them with friends!
